The idea of Argos (Art and Restoration Glossary Operating System) stems from the project Artis, patronized by the European Community beginning in 1997, and among the projects in the line of action Info 2000. Its objective is to create a CD-ROM on traditional painting techniques and their restoration, coordinated by the Institute and containing, among other things, a rich glossary of 1,200 entries. Experimenting with the possibilities offered by the interaction of texts and photographic material, the translations in various languages, the willingness to put together the experiences developed working in close contact with international partners, have pushed the Institute to further develop the project.

With its presence on the internet, Argos will act as an open laboratory, where the Istituto per l’Arte e il Restauro offers information to the art historical and restoration community, while at the same time searches for confirmations and contributions considered both for further enrichment of the entries already present and for gathering new entries. The expectation for Argos on the internet is above all important for the constitution of additional multilingual glossaries, that may effectively guarantee a free circulation of knowledge, safeguarding linguistic patrimonies and putting diverse cultures in close contact.

General Director of the Istituto per l’Arte e il Restauro
